Man Survives Hit and Run

I will never forget the day September 17, 2008, when my dad was brought into the ER trauma area. I was working here at MetroHealth in the ER department and the EMS had brought in an unknown male - it happened to be my dad!

He was walking across the street when he was suddenly struck by a utility van, which was running a red light and speeding. Dad suffered many injuries and came near death; he had only one functioning lung at the time and his other lung had collapsed. He stopped breathing and he was in a coma for a while.

Thanks to our trauma team here at MetroHealth, my father made it through -- they stepped in and gave my dad a second chance at life.  He was in the ICU for a while and then was sent to the skilled nursing facility for many months and had to learn how to walk and talk all over again.

Our family is very blessed to have been here at MetroHealth. I truly believe my dad is living today talking, walking, and breathing well again because of the fast acting, caring, and well organized employees here at the MetroHealth Emergency department.

From the very moment my dad was brought in the whole staff was involved, social work, patient service reps, FCs, MetroHealth Police, doctors, nurses, EMTs!  Everyone stepped in and went above and beyond to show they truly cared about saving a life that night!

They made the saying, “Miracles and Hope” stand out that night!  So to our ER department, ICU, and the rehabilitation floors, THANK YOU for saving my dad! Special thanks to Dr. Knoeller and all the staff in the ER you are the best!!!! We will never forget what you have done for our family! Thank you!

Thank God your father was brought here to MetroHealth immediately. Shelby, you already knew what an incredible hospital Metro was for other patients anyway and so your father too, was given the very best care possible. You can't write this stuff, what and how it happened to your dad and your discovery of the incoming trauma patient. I have goosebumps at the mere thought. This is a great story of hope and the realization that prayers and great medicine and everyones skill, make it possible for your dad to be here with you and the rest of your family. God bless you all!

I couldn't have said it better than my sister. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to the entire staff at MetroHealth. Thank you for giving our father another chance at life.
