Cyclist recovers and gives back after stroke

Mark Ballenger had a severe stroke in May 1997 at the age of 43. He was treated at UH with a hemicraniectomy and survived. He then was transferred to MetroHealth for many weeks of therapy. The doctors remarked that they never expected Mark to walk again. Mark is also a competitive cyclist.

Since that time he has recovered well, even with a left-side deficit. He has been employed by Giant Eagle for the past five years, drives again and has also returned to competive cycling. Mark is grateful to MetroHealth for his recovery. He presently visits the stroke patients on 7C at MetroHealth with a family member and a therapy dog named Emma.

Thank you, MetroHealth!
